I was pleasantly surprised tonight when I went out for my run. I felt pretty good. Why? Well, I'm glad you asked.Foam Roller.
Never heard of it? Well, you are in for a treat. Go online and...I guess you are already online if you are reading this...go to a new browser window...uh, after you are done reading the whole blog and becoming a follower...so go to a new browser window and do some research.
Here is a nice starting point: Foam Roller Exercises
The Foam Roller is mainly a tool you can use for self massage. Not the comfortable, relaxing massage you get when you are at the spa. No, this is more like the one time you decided to go to for a sports massage and you were gripping the table like you were getting an deep, penetrating colonoscopy from Bertha the Nurse after she had a bad day. How bad? Well, go get a sport's massage and you'll know what I am talking about.
So, why use a Foam Roller then? Because it really isn't all that bad. You control the pressure with your body weight and the Foam Roller provides the surface that gives you the massage. You can massage your glutes, your hamstrings, your calves, your back, your quads and a host of other body parts. You'll be surprised how a couple of minutes on each part can make a difference.
I used it today about an hour before my run on my calves, quads, hamstrings and lower back. By the time I went for my run, I was nicely loosened up (no colon jokes necessary here...)
Add to that the fact that I was listening to my new favorite band, Twelve Foot Ninja, and I had a good pace going without much discomfort. I have noticed that my right calf is a bit sore, so I may use the Foam Roller again tonight.
Here are my numbers:
Time: 15:00
Distance: 1.66 miles
Pace: 9:04/m
Max Pace: 7:57/m
