Day 277, 88 To Go

October 4, 2013

Hello folks and happy Friday.  I am glad another week is in the books and I can get to what I hope to be a more relaxing weekend.  I have the car thing all settled, so I don't need to deal with sitting at a car dealership all day.  I do have a birthday to bring Derek to, but it isn't that far a drive and I will get to see some friends and get a Jamba Juice on the way back.  So, all in all, it is shaping up to be a relaxing weekend.

I do not intend to run long this Sunday either.  As I have said previously, I am still concerned about my long term running health and I still feel like I am not quite all the way back.  I am hoping a few weeks of easier running and some distance between my vacation and me will allow me to recover.  So far so good.  Today was a good run.

Here are my numbers:

Time: 30:00
Distance: 3.48 miles
Pace: 8:36/m
Max Pace: 7:24/m
Calories: 354
Avg HR: 131
Max HR: 147

Today looks almost exactly like yesterday.  Again, I did not push hard and I just let my body do what it felt good doing.  Towards the end of the 30 minutes, I did start to fatigue a bit, so I slowed down.  I felt fine after the run, so I think I am starting to feel better.  Let's see how tomorrow feels!

Now, let's get to the next topic in the 22 Essential Pieces of Marathon Training Advice from Active.com.

To Race Before the Marathon or Not?

If you have a time goal for your marathon or you want to run faster than your last race, it can be advantageous to race a half marathon. Not only will you be able to estimate your marathon finish time, but you'll also familiarize yourself with racing, preparing your race-day routine, and executing a pacing strategy. If you're a first-timer and your only goal is to finish the race, then it's wise to stick to your regular training program and forget about a half marathon. —Jason Fitzgerald

The whole point of this article is to help you decide if you should run a half before you run your marathon.  The short answer?  If this is your first marathon, then no.  If it is not, and you have a time goal, then yes.  Read the article for some more detailed arguments, but that is the gist of it.
